I thought I had a handle on how to improve my efficiency this week: Try doing a little fiction in the evenings and some of the various projects I’ve been neglecting during the day. The horrible cigarette ssmoke-induced headache Wednesday, coupled with taking much of Monday off (TYG came home in the afternoon from an out-of-town trip). The principle seems sound though, so I’ll try again next week.
Still, I did reasonably well:
•I reworked the new opening on Brain From Outer Space and got a little further on the replot. I think it’s shaping up at last. I’ll present the new opening to the writing group soon and see how well tbey think it works.
•I finished the final draft of Wodehouse Murder Case and printed it up. It goes off to the first market this weekend. I also sent out Savage Year.
•I finished the first draft of the assigned anthology story I’m working on. It needs lots of work (as my first drafts usually do), but it’s a start. I’m also reading some Vietnam-related history for background and that’s a big help.
•I relooked at Not By Honor Bound—no actual writing, but I can see where to fix the plot, I think. As I’ve mentioned before, Lester Dent’s plotting structure helps a lot with rewriting.
•I submitted a new And column but the editor (unusually) had a rewrite request (a perfectly sound one). So that took a little more time than expected.
